About the Item

A 15-inch terrestrial floor globe by Nims Co, set within a brass meridian and a mahogany horizon ring with the signs of the zodiac and a panel stating ‘Manufactured by H.B. Nims Co., Troy, New York’, all raised on an ornate tripod cast iron stand decorated with acanthus leaves and triple petal feet, above castors. American, circa 1870. Footnote: The firm H. B. Nims Co. was one of seven incarnations of Merriam, Moore Co. who Henry Nims (1828-1896) joined as a salesman in 1849. Because of his success in that department, he was made a partner in 1852 and, when Merriam left in 1858, the house became Moore Nims. By 1869 Nims had bought out Moore and called the firm H.B. Nims Co. until 1886 when Joseph Knight joined him.
