About the Item

French-made terrestrial globe, edited by G. Thomas in Paris, at 44 Rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs, dating from the late 19th century. The cartography reflects the geopolitical order of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, with Persia indicated as such, an already downsized Ottoman Empire, and the configuration of the Far East prior to the major transformations of the early twentieth century, elements that allow for consistent and reliable dating. The globe is made of pressed cardboard covered with printed cartographic gores, mounted on an inclined axis with a side metal arm and original turned wooden support, of understated elegance and typical French taste. Conservation status: the item shows obvious signs of time and use. There is a major blow at the top of the sphere in the northern area (Russia zone), which caused a recessed deformation and slight irregularity of the spherical shape, visible near the pole. There are also cracks along the joints of the gores, widespread abrasions, color variations, and stains, all consistent with the age of the object. However, the structure is stable and the surface retains an authentic patina with great decorative appeal. Globe of strong historical suggestion, appreciable for its authentic, lived-in character, ideal as a decorative object or for collectors of antique geographic instruments aware of the state of preservation.
