Degli anni trenta. Base in legno tornita con bussola e sfera in carta pesta completa del cerchio del meridiano in ottone inciso. Altezza cm 64 – inches 25.2, diametro sfera cm 33- inches 13. Fondata nel 1909 a Berlino da Paul Oestergaard, nipote di Peter J. Oestergaard che produceva globi alla fine dell'800, la Columbus è la più antica casa costruttrice di globi, che lavora ancora oggi al mondo. Durante più di un secolo la Columbus ha innovato l'industria della manifattura di globi e l'esperienza accumulata in 4 generazioni ha permesso alla Columbus di raggiungere lo status di principale produttore di globi del mondo. Peter J. Oestergaard iniziò la sua produzione alla fine dell'800. Dopo aver prodotto per alcuni anni modelli terrestri per il Berlin Newspaper Allgemeine Zeitung, divenne ben presto noto per i suoi globi dai dettagli sbalorditivi. Decise quindi di aprire un suo negozio di globi; a Peter Oesteergard successe suo figlio Peter Oestergaard Junior, che rinominò la ditta Drei Kegel Verlag; la ditta cessò l'attività durante la seconda guerra mondiale a causa della prematura morte di Peter Oesterggard Junior. Un globo celeste è di solito alloggiato in una struttura formata da un primo anello che rappresenta l’orizzonte dell’osservatore e un secondo anello che rappresenta il meridiano del luogo in cui si compie l’osservazione; sulla superficie del globo sono poi tracciati gli altri cerchi fondamentali della sfera celeste (equatore, tropici, ecc.). I globi celesti riportano sulla loro superficie le stelle individuate nel II secolo d.C. da Claudio Tolomeo, che le catalogò nella sua opera “Almagesto” (dove illustrava anche come costruire un globo celeste in rame con i cerchi di riferimento per individuare le stelle che erano elencate nel catalogo), e queste stelle sono poi circondate dal disegno delle costellazioni che le contengono. Bisogna porre molta attenzione al fatto che le costellazioni non sono rappresentate come si vedono guardando il cielo, ma specularmente, cioè come se si guardasse la sfera dall’esterno.Probabilmente i primi a costruire questo tipo di globi furono i Caldei e gli Egizi, ma la tradizione attribuiva solitamente la costruzione dei primi globi celesti ad Anassimandro e Talete di Mileto. Una delle raffigurazioni più antiche di una sfera celeste risale al II secolo d.C.: si tratta del cosiddetto Atlante Farnese, oggi conservato al Museo Archeologico di Napoli, una riproduzione romana di una statua ellenistica che raffigura Atlante che sorregge un globo celeste, su cui sono scolpite 48 costellazioni e i principali cerchi celesti.
