About the Item

Crafted in France circa 1960, this clever piece combines form and function in the Louis XIII style. Built of walnut with a warm, hand-rubbed patina, the metamorphic stool features a rectangular molded top resting on turned supports. With a simple movement, the top section folds outward to reveal three broad treads, transforming the piece into a practical set of library steps. The turned baluster supports and octagonal stretchers provide strength and stability while lending visual interest, and the rich walnut grain shows subtle color variation that enhances its antique charm. The stool stands on four elegant tapering legs, completing the traditional silhouette. Sturdy and in very good condition commensurate with age and use, this versatile piece is ideal for a library, study, or living room, serving equally well as functional steps to reach high shelves.
