A 19th century large Italian neoclassical gilt bronze-mounted verde antico and white marble obelisk. Resting on a square base lined with white marble and framed by two gilt bronze egg-and-dart friezes, this large verde antic marble Neoclassical obelisk illustrates the Egyptian taste that spread all over Europe after Napoleon’s expeditions at the beginning of the 19th century. Symbolizing the sun, obelisks were originally erected at the entrance of ancient Egyptian temples and became a recurring ornament in classical architecture after the Roman conquest. This large 19th century Italian neoclassical gilt bronze-mounted verde antico and white marble obelisk could impose its stately presence in any traditional home.
