About the Item

This is a very decorative pair of 19th-century Italian obelisks; probably a Grand Tour souvenir. They are made of wood, coated in black lacquer, and mounted on a stepped base. Three sides of each obelisk are adorned with golden Latin inscriptions. Underneath these inscriptions is a finely executed black floral pattern (on all sides). The design follows 19th-century Egyptian fashion, reflecting the neoclassical interest in ancient forms and symbols. The combination of dark lacquer and gilded lettering is especially elegant. As a pair, they are particularly striking, exemplifying the quality of Italian craftsmanship and neoclassical interest from that period. Obelisks originated in ancient Egypt and were reinterpreted as decorative objects during the 18th- and 19th-century neoclassical period. Stylized versions made of wood with lacquer and ornaments, such as this pair, were especially popular in Italy. As typical Grand Tour objects, obelisks reflect their owners' cultural interests to this day, complementing sophisticated offices and private libraries.
