Art Deco Style Lacquer Painted and Wood Screen with Deer, Late 20th Century

About the Item

A spectacular large Art Deco style lacquer painted wooden screen with images of deer in a forrest, in the styles of Jean Dunand and Pham Hau, late 20th century, circa 1980's. The magnificent tall, six paneled folding screen of hand painted lacquer with copper leaf on wood panels, with metal hinges and metal clad feet. The front of the screen hand painted with a delightful scene of deer in a lush forest setting. A single stag presides over a small herd of five doe. The stag strides confidently forwards, while three of the doe gather in a clearing. The last two doe frolic in the underbrush and trees. Wonderful shades of green and cream stand out beautifully against a metallic copper leaf ground, almost mimicking the tones of a Flemish tapestry. The copper leaf provides a richness and added depth to the scene. The back plain and painted black. The screen is heavily influenced by Japanese byobu paper folding screens, but also draws major inspiration from the works of the legendary Swiss Art Deco artist and cabinet maker Jean Dunand (1877 to 1942), who was known for his ingenious lacquer works, especially screens. The design also shares some similarities with the renowned Vietnamese lacquer artist Pham Hau (1903 to 1995), who often incorporated landscapes and animals into his lacquer works. This screen seems carry an especially strong influence from Pham Hau's seminal 1938 work "Cerfs et biches dans la Moyenne region, Tonkin" (Stags and Doe in the Middle Regions, Tonkin). However, the true inspiration for the screen are two 10th century, Liao Dynasty paintings currently housed in the National Palace Museum Taipei, “Herd of Deer in a Maple Grove” and “Herd of Deer in an Autumnal Grove”.

A powerful and dramatic pair of Italian neoclassical carved and gilt wood mythical animal figures on faux painted bases, mid 19th century or earlier, Italy. The fantastic beasts are well carved, with dramatic wings that follow the sensuous curve of the neck, and a sinuous body ends in an eel-like tail gracefully curled in upon itself. The bearded heads feature a flattened snout with sharp teeth and a lolling tongue, and pointed horse ears and mane. The long forelegs stretched out in front of them and ending in pawed and clawed feet. The beasts have characteristics of several different mythical animals, making them hard to positively identify. The most likely candidates would be dragons, hippocampi, or chimeras. The beasts are unfinished to the back, indicating they were originally part of a relief decoration, possibly from a mirror. They have now been mounted to wooden bases faux painted to imitate porphyry. They would make perfect bookends or mantle sculptures.
