Wood and Mirrored Folding Screen, Mid-20th Century
Located in Atlanta, GA
A free-standing mirrored three-panel folding screen room divider from the mid-20th century, Britain. This vintage screen features three-connected sections, each having a carved-wood raised panel at bottom, and a diamond-pattern lattice at top half with antiqued mirror glass. Front and back of this room divider are equally decorated and mirrored on both sides, making it an easy piece to float within a room. Each section is hinged together, allowing it to collapse, and making it easy to transport and installation. The wood has a rich, ebony finish. This mid-century free-standing screen, would work well as a dressing room screen...

Japanese Six Panel Screen with Hotei, Edo Period, Early 19th Century
Located in Austin, TX
A delightful Japanese six panel painted paper screen featuring the beloved figure Hotei, Edo Period, early 19th century.
Hotei, called Budai in China, and known as the Laughing Buddha or Fat Buddha in the West, is considered to be an emanation of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future.
In Japan, he also holds a special place as one of the Seven Lucky Gods, being the god of fortune, and protector of children.
He is always portrayed as a mirthful and corpulent man, dressed in loose robes that show off his round belly. He carries a sack with him, said to be filled with treasure. As the protector of children, he is often portrayed with them playing on or around him, as he is here. The children portrayed in this screen are dressed in Chinese style clothing...

Pair Italian Neoclassical Craved and Gilt Wood Mythical Beasts, mid 19th century
Located in Austin, TX
A powerful and dramatic pair of Italian neoclassical carved and gilt wood mythical animal figures on faux painted bases, mid 19th century or earlier, Italy.
The fantastic beasts are well carved, with dramatic wings that follow the sensuous curve of the neck, and a sinuous body ends in an eel-like tail gracefully curled in upon itself. The bearded heads feature a flattened snout with sharp teeth and a lolling tongue, and pointed horse ears and mane. The long forelegs stretched out in front of them and ending in pawed and clawed feet.
The beasts have characteristics of several different mythical animals, making them hard to positively identify. The most likely candidates would be dragons, hippocampi, or chimeras.
The beasts are unfinished to the back, indicating they were originally part of a relief decoration, possibly from a mirror. They have now been mounted to wooden bases faux painted to imitate porphyry.
They would make perfect bookends or mantle sculptures.
