About the Item
Eliane and Monique Cloutier, both wives of the Cloutier Brothers - renowned French ceramists, joined hands to create under the pseudonym 'Girofla'. Graduates from l'Ecole des Arts Appliqués de Paris (Paris Applied Art School), the duo began by creating patterns and publishing works for esteemed brands like Van Cleef and Arpels, Hallmark, and Hermès before starting their own studio for crafting and distributing decorative objects, dolls, silk paintings, and fashion accessories.
Girofla's whimsical and vibrant style garnered tremendous success, with exhibitions and displays of their works being held across the globe, especially in the 1970s. Their collaborative efforts are still frequently showcased at various galleries, including Benoit Guyot in Lyon, France.
One of their noteworthy works is a poetic and luminous three-part folding screen, depicting imaginary characters from the sea, earth, and air, rendered in dominant shades of blue, green, and yellow, respectively. This French artistic piece, created circa 1990, portrays an enchanting world filled with expressionless but captivating Sirens, angels, and children, coexisting in a singing and playful universe inhabited by both serious and carefree beings.
