About the Item

This impressive sign was once hung above the entrance to a Chinese ancestral hall. It is made from planks of Elmwood covered in layers of thick black tree lacquer for protection from the elements. The characters read, from right to left, “north, hall, spring, forever”. Ancestral halls were usually found in villages in which many families bore the same surname, such as “Chen” or “Li”. The ancestral hall looked like a house but it was only used during religious ceremonies and holidays. Members of the clan would gather periodically to pay respects. It appears to be the early 20th Century or earlier. From Shanxi Province.

Chinese Square Dining or "Eight Immortals" Table
Located in Chicago, IL
This sturdy, almost architectural Chinese table is is an excellent example of "scholar's furniture". Scholar's furniture is known for rounded frames that suggest tree trunks and a general lack of unnecessary adornment. The table's floating panel top is held by round corner posts that gracefully transform into square feet as they meet the ground. Arched spandrels connect the legs to the top, suggesting the roof of a building is held up by corner posts. Two drawers are held in the thick waist. The table boasts highly original oxblood lacquer patina, gently rubbed through to the wood over many decades. These tables are sometimes known as "eight immortals...
