About the Item
This intricately designed, three-panel iron screen from circa 1910 is a piece of German Arts and Crafts, or Jugendstil, metalwork. It is attributed to the notable German architect and designer Richard Riemerschmid (1868-1957), a key figure in the Jugendstil movement who was influenced by the British Arts and Crafts movement. Riemerschmid was known for creating functional, well-made designs and was a founder of the Deutsche Werkstätten für Kunst im Handwerk and the Deutscher Werkbund.
The screen features a large central panel with an arched cutout, from which a grid of metal sections with a convex circular metal spot in the centre are suspended each connected by a metal clip. The two stabilising side panels each contain a single grid of similar metal pieces with embossed circles. All three sections are connected with decorative hinges on the reverse and the screen stands on four conical feet. The flaps can fold into the main panel for easy transport. While serving a practical purpose, the piece also functions as a purely decorative object.
