About the Item
Early 19th Century Chinese Coromandel Eight-Panel Screen — Provenance: Perret Vibert, Paris
Early 19th Century Chinese Coromandel Eight-Panel Screen with Palace Attendants and Scholars’ Objects
A magnificent Early 19th Century Chinese Coromandel lacquer screen, exquisitely carved and hand-painted across eight panels, depicting intricate palace scenes with attendants and guards among pavilions and garden architecture. The composition is surrounded by symbolic still-life vignettes of vases, scrolls, censers, and scholar’s objects, emblematic of the refined literati culture of the Qing dynasty.
As the eye travels across the surface, a vibrant narrative unfolds — figures in elegant attire, majestic buildings, and serene river landscapes alive with activity. The artistry reveals a lively world of courtly attendants, musicians, and craftsmen, complemented by a floral border richly adorned with fauna and game birds, symbolizing prosperity, longevity, and harmony.
The reverse side unveils another enchanting scene: children in traditional costumes playing amid dragons and mythical creatures, a joyful celebration of imagination and daily life within the palace complex.
This rare screen is a masterpiece of Chinese decorative art, blending storytelling, symbolism, and exquisite craftsmanship. A true statement piece, it serves as a window into early 19th-century Qing artistry and would make a remarkable focal point in any collection, whether displayed as a room divider, wall panel, or standalone work of art.
