About the Item
Early 20th Century French Empire Style Glass Ormolu Wood Fire Screen
French, Early 20th Century
Height 104cm, width 61cm, depth 39cm
This early 20th century fire screen, created in the distinguished Empire manner, reflects the grandeur and refinement of the late 18th century decorative arts. Drawing on both Greco-Roman and Egyptian influences, the piece displays the balance and symmetry characteristic of the style.
Its oval frame encloses a central opaque glass panel, designed to shield the room from sparks and heat while still allowing the glow of the fire to be enjoyed. The surrounding wooden frame is enriched with gilt-bronze details, including laurel garlands and rosettes, lending an ornate yet harmonious finish.
The lower section is supported by four shaped feet joined with a stretcher decorated in finely cast ormolu panels. Above the feet rest twin sphinx figures, a striking reference to the Egyptian revival elements so prominent in the French Empire tradition.
Combining elegance with practicality, this screen is as decorative as it is useful.
