About the Item

Vintage MCM, four panel teak screen or room divider with repeating geometric designs, done in the Kumiko style. Each panel is 24.5" wide, when fully open equals 72" w. The screen design is based on regular hexagons, this geometric motif resembles a hemp leaf. The beautiful traditional design is used not only in architecture, but also in fashion and graphic design, Since ancient times the Asanoha motif has been used in holy rituals. The triangle denotes protection against evil, and Asanoha, an aggregate of triangles, conveys a meaning of strength and beauty. Kumiko- is a Japanese technique of assembling wooden pieces without the use of nails. Thinly-slit wooden pieces are grooved, punched, and mortised, and then fitted individually using a plane, saw, chisel, and other tools to make fine-adjustments. The technique was developed in Japan in the Asuka Era (600-700 AD. Kumiko panels slot together and remain in place through pressure alone, and that pressure is achieved through meticulously calculating, cutting, and arranging interweaving joints. The end-result is a complex pattern that is used primarily in the creation of shoji doors and screens.
