About the Item

This firescreen features a beautifully embroidered central red-ground fabric panel, the embroidery portraying faintly Chinese-style motifs. The embroidered panel is held within a giltwood frame, the design of which is distinctly neoclassical—the frame is constructed architecturally, featuring a pair of Classical columns supporting an entablature and pediment. The combination of Neoclassicism with Chinese influenced motifs demonstrates the chinoiserie taste that was so dominant in French art and design during much of the latter 19th century. This present piece is a particularly good example, not least because of the magnificent color combination of red fabric with gilded wood.
