About the Item
Pyroengraved Screen – Medieval Mediterranean Townscape, Art Nouveau / Art Deco, 1930
A rare and remarkable three-panel screen, entirely pyroengraved, depicting a landscape of a medieval Mediterranean town.
In a style blending Art Nouveau with Art Deco influences, the artist Guyot (signed and dated “Guyot 30”) presents a finely detailed scene, where every element seems captured in a frozen moment of light and stillness.
The scene reveals an old fortified town, featuring a two-arched stone bridge.
At the center of the bridge stands a prominent fortified gate—perhaps a toll booth or barbican—guarding the entrance to the city.
Beneath the arches, an almost dried-up river reveals two thin streams flowing through detailed riverbeds.
The work is distinguished by subtle color highlights in certain areas, enhancing the depth of the composition without disrupting the overall harmony of the stained wood. This partial use of color reveals contrasts in shadow, the textures of buildings, the varied stonework, and draws the eye toward a small figure wearing a pink hat entering the city.
In the background, tall cypress trees, gentle hills, and large cumulus clouds evoke the timeless charm of a semi-rural Mediterranean landscape—somewhere between the South of France, Italy, or Spain.
A characterful piece, both decorative and narrative, ideal for a refined interior or a collection of unique objects.

Superb impressionist folding screen with 4 panels in painted canvas.
The painting depicts the shores of a canal. We see a fisherman on the right bank, accompanied by his little white dog quietly sitting in the grass. The man observes the 2 boats (a sailing boat and a barque) which sail on the water. Woods appear in the background.
The painting is of very good quality, well done and bright.
