About the Item
This six-panel Japanese folding screen presents a richly detailed composition of scholar’s objects, rendered in vibrant mineral pigments on paper. Each panel depicts vertical stacks of books adorned with symbolic items such as flowering vases, scrolls, brush pots, lanterns, censers, and ornamental vessels—iconography traditionally associated with scholarship, cultivation, and the pursuit of wisdom.
These pictorial still lifes, known as “chaekgeori” in the Korean tradition and similarly appreciated in Japan, reflect a deep reverence for literature and the decorative arts. The crisp geometry of the stacked volumes contrasts beautifully with the organic flow of florals and natural forms, creating a balanced and visually arresting tableau.
Elegant fabric borders in patterned black and gold complete the work, adding depth and framing the artwork with sophistication. Ideal for use as a room divider, wall-mounted artwork, or backdrop, this vintage piece offers timeless appeal for both traditional and contemporary interiors. A standout addition for collectors, decorators, or any space in need of visual intrigue and historic charm.
