About the Item
"VIEW OF NEW YORK BAY FROM NEW JERSEY”
Produced by Zuber
Cie. Rixheim, Alsace, France, originally designed in 1834, by Jean-Julien Deltil (1791-1863).
Recently mounted as a seven panel screen, the paper is laid down on board with wooden frame. Verso is hand decorated with a tromp l'oeil of architectural paneling. This particular woodblock wallpaper was produced in the early 20th Century and was sold through Carlhian
Cie. in Paris.
Each panel measures 84"-inches (208 cm) high x 18 1/2"-inches (47 cm) wide, The whole screen is 84"-inches (208 cm) high x 130"-inches (330 cm) fully open.
There is a complete Zuber "Views of North America" installed in The Diplomatic Reception Room in the White House, Washington, DC.
The most striking feature of the oval parlor, is the "Vue de l'Amérique du Nord," a panoramic wallpaper illustrating thirty-two scenes from American history: steamboats in the spray of Niagara Falls, merchant ships unloading in Boston Harbor, and horse-drawn carriages traversing New York's Palisades, along with, throughout, the intermingling of a white, black, and Native American populace.
The screen underwent a professional restoration, the sky and some missing areas were inpainted.
