Vintage Four-Panel Black Lacquer Folding Screen with Hand-Painted Crane Motif
Located in Yonkers, NY
This striking four-panel folding screen, crafted in mid-20th-century China, marries graphic modernity with timeless decorative motifs. Each panel’s upper edge undulates to create a sculptural, multi-level silhouette, while the deep black lacquer ground provides a dramatic backdrop for the carefully rendered scene. Two graceful cranes—painted in soft whites with red-tipped crowns—stand poised in concentric gold-line ripples, their long legs and outstretched wings rendered in subtly shaded brushwork that conveys both strength and serenity. Surrounding the birds, abstract reeds and ribbon-like forms sweep across the panels in gradients of teal, lavender, and gold, suggesting stylized waterways and wind-blown foliage. Unobtrusive brass hinges allow the screen to extend into a full, bold arc or collapse flat for easy storage. Measuring approximately 80½″ high by 80½″ wide overall, it is substantial enough to define a seating area, screen an entryway, or serve as a moody focal wall. Surface wear—including fine lacquer crazing and minor scuffs—speaks to decades of use and imbues the piece with authentic vintage character. Whether displayed in a minimalist loft, an Art Deco–inspired interior, or alongside antique furnishings, this black-lacquer heron screen...

Portraits by Steve McCurry Photography Book
By Steve McCurry
Located in Moreno Valley, CA
Portraits by Steve McCurry Photography Book Steve McCurry Phaidon Press, Jun 17, 1999 - Photography. Title Portraits Author Steve McCurry Photographs by Steve McCurry. Illustrated by Steve McCurry Edition reprint Publisher Phaidon Press, 1999. Steve McCurry never set out to take portraits. In 1985, he photographed an Afghan girl for the National Geographic. The intensity of the subject's eyes and her compelling gaze made this one of the most widely and consistently celebrated portraits in the history of contemporary photography. This accompanies the other remarkable faces he has encountered whilst travelling throughout the world, collected together in an engaging and strangely moving series of unique street portraits: unposed, unstylized images of people that reveal the true universality of the depths of human emotion. Critically acclaimed and recognized internationally for his classic reportage, over the last twenty years he has worked on numerous assignments, travelling extensively throughout the Middle and Far East. McCurry has won first prize in the World Press Awards, and was named Magazine Photographer of the Year in 1984. He is most famous for his evocative color photography, which has captured stories of human experience that, in the finest documentary tradition, transcend boundaries of language and culture. Born in Philadelphia, Steve McCurry studied history and cinematography at Pennsylvania State University before working as a freelance photographer in India. His career was launched when he crossed the Pakistan border into rebel-controlled Afghanistan, just before the Russian invasion, to take the first pictures of the conflict. Since then many of McCurry's images have become modern icons. His coverage won him the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad, an award dedicated to photographers exhibiting exceptional courage and enterprise. McCurry has covered many areas of international and civil conflict, including the Iran-Iraq war, Beirut and the Gulf War...
