About the Item

This extremely rare Flemish Gothic coffer survives in remarkable, untouched condition, retaining its original color and surface—an exceptional rarity for a chest of this age. The front is divided into four rectangular panels, each finely carved with geometric arrangements of stylized flowers and lozenge motifs, creating a rhythmic and architectural façade. At the center sits the original keyhole escutcheon, with the carved initials “SR” positioned below. The lid is formed of four panels, all in outstanding condition and notably free from splitting. The sides each feature two plain panels, while the back is constructed with five rectangular panels, where the three original hinges remain clearly visible. The bottom of the coffer is completely original, displaying a dry, naturally bleached surface. The chest also retains its four legs at their original height, an increasingly rare survival detail.

Long circa 1800 Gothic Style Oak Board Trunk from France
Located in Dallas, TX
This is an unusually long Gothic style trunk from France, measuring nearly 6.5 feet long. It is carved from thick oak planks, and it dates to circa 1800. The trunk has well carved characteristic Gothic ornamentation on all of the front panels, while the rest of the piece remains simple, except a small molding to the lid. The big oak panels are joined by dowel reinforced mortise and tenon construction. The long single plank lid is attached by iron hinges and opens to reveal a large rectangular space which reveals how all the boards were assembled. There is also a latch and keyhole at the center. This rare trunk would be perfect at the foot of a king size bed, an accent piece under a tall tapestry...
