About the Item
New finds from Tohoku area, Japan.
Paper covered wooden box with lid - a product of Meiji to Taisho period (1868-1926) estimate from the style
conditions.
Can be displayed as an unique wabi sabi art piece, also as display stand with storage capacity.
Box is fully covered even the bottom of the box to the inside - inside of the lid too. There're the legs attached.
This type of papers are called "Shibugami", the paper stained / coated with Kakishibu (persimmon tannin), this is a traditional technic to reinforce the paper, so the box coated with Shibugami prevents the humidity, molds / bug damages.
Probably used as a storage box for something delicate, especially needs to keep away from the wet - probably papers or fabrics, the shape of the box would fit these usage.
There're 6 pairs of wooden brackets attached inside of the box. No shelf boards left, but still able to add.

108 years-old wooden small tansu (chest of drawers) with 4 drawers.
Product of Taisho 5 (1916), written on the bottom together with maker's address
name.
Finished with traditional Urushi lacquer. The original laquer remains well
gives a good wabi sabi touch.
Each handles are partly covered with Boro (hand-woven, indigo dyed cotton cloth) - this is another wabi sabi element of this tansu.
