About the Item
Paper covered wooden box with lid - made around 1894 (Meiji 27), written on the lid with brush calligraphy.
Can be displayed as a unique wabi sabi art piece, also as display stand with storage capacity.
Box is fully covered, reinforced
coated with reused Washi (traditional Japanese paper), even the bottom of the box to the inside - inside of the lid too.
The unique wabi sabi texture is coming from the layers of reused Washi, the papers were flipped when layered
glued repeatedly for years. so the text on papers became sort of abstract patterns.
The original owner used this box as book storage. The calligraphy text "書物箱", means "book storage box" written on the lid, together with the year.
So the reused papers probably applied aimed to cover up the slits between wood boards, but not only for that - because the lid wasn't designed to be tight enough.
I guess the owner wanted to add a kind of decoration to the box too.
Box inner dimensions : (w 573mm / h 300mm / d 377mm)
Actual item weight : lbs (5.2 kg)
