About the Item

A striking example of late 19th century American luggage craftsmanship, this antique steamer trunk features embossed zinc-clad panels paired with wide wooden slats, black metal strapping, and period-authentic hardware. The convex, dome-top profile not only hints at its premium status in its day (designed to be stacked last aboard ship), but also adds sculptural presence in a modern interior. This trunk is unusually well-preserved, with original patinated leather side handles and robust cast iron hardware. The body showcases an attractive pressed tin (or zinc) grid pattern, a sought-after detail found in trunks from the 1880s to 1910s, often referred to as “embossed metal” or “diamond tin.” The wood has a rich golden tone and retains evidence of hand-planed construction on the interior, where the grain and original saw marks remain visible. Once used for long voyages by train or steamship, this piece now works beautifully as a coffee table, blanket chest, or eye-catching entry bench with hidden storage. Its warm material mix of metal, wood, and leather make it compatible with rustic, industrial, farmhouse, and eclectic interiors. MEASUREMENTS: H 22.75" x W 35" x D 20.25" CONDITION: Antique condition with lots of age, wear and patina. No key for lock. Wood elements have moderate to age and wear.
