This antique Indian chest, dating to the 19th century, captures the charm of regional craftsmanship with its richly painted façade and architectural detailing. Resting on short bracket feet, the chest is topped with a hinged lid that opens to a practical storage compartment, making it as functional today as when first created.
The front is adorned with colorful arches outlined in red, green, and blue, accented with delicate gilding. Within these recesses, small mirrors were originally set to catch and reflect the light, a decorative flourish typical of Indian folk tradition. Though now largely lost with only traces remaining, their presence is still felt in the layered textures and soft shimmer across the aged surfaces. The worn patina of the wood, combined with the fading pigments and scattered losses, speaks to the piece’s history and long life of use.
