About the Item

High-quality camphorwood chest. The top and all sides are made from a single piece of mirror-cut camphorwood with a beautiful grain pattern. Original brass fittings and carrying handles. Round original brass fitting on the front, richly chased in the form of birds, flowers, and foliage. The side carrying handles are likewise finely chased. An exceptionally fine and powerful chest with provenance from a Danish manor. Qing period, China, 1840–1860. Camphorwood was traditionally used for chests in old China because of its natural resistance to pests, durability, pleasant aroma, beautiful grain, and symbolic value. The properties of the wood protected the contents from insects and helped keep them fresh, while its aesthetic and symbolic qualities made it a sign of wealth and status.
