About the Item

This early 17th-century Italian cassone, crafted in walnut circa 1630, exemplifies the ceremonial grandeur of traditional wedding chests. Constructed with remarkable craftsmanship, each side board—including the base—is formed from a single solid plank, and the piece retains its untouched original patina. The front features a finely carved central cartouche displaying the coat of arms of a noble family, framed by oak leaves and acorns, and bordered by an intricate moulding with large flanking lunettes. Carved atlantes anchor the front corners, while the plinth and lid edge are finished with continuous scalloped detailing. The chest rests on later 19th-century paw feet replacements, typical for pieces of this age. Original wrought-iron handles, lock, and traces of early hinges survive, underscoring its historical authenticity and ceremonial purpose.
