About the Item

This French coffer from the Brittany–Normandy region, titled Natividad, retains a rich and attractive original patina and stands as a finely preserved example of regional devotional furniture. The front is centered by a carved narrative panel framed by lunettes, depicting the Nativity in Bethlehem beneath the guiding star. Joseph and Mary appear to the right with the newborn Christ, while the Visitation of the Kings unfolds to the left, showing Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar presenting gold, incense, and myrrh. Flanking columns are clad with acanthus leaves and topped by an unrolled acanthus motif surmounted by an eagle, symbolizing power and divine authority. The frieze is fully carved with lunettes, while the sides display geometric rosettes and stylized acanthus. The back is paneled, with later hinges and discreet leg restorations consistent with age.
