This would have been a very expensive piece in its day and the height of sophisticated travel. It was made during the British occupation of China, this is known as export furniture meaning it was made for visiting dignitaries and the military to purchase and take home as a keepsake from their trip like the Italian Gran tour pieces so popular during the Victorian era This piece has an amazing patination that can only be achieved through honest age and genuine use This is a decorators piece and really sets a mood, it can be used laying down as a coffee table of course which is what most people do, they make great conversation pieces.
