Extensive Tortoise Shell Sterling Silver Vanity in Travel Case

The quintessential Edwardian era train case for the well-heeled Grand Tour traveler, this one has survived in excellent form, partly owing to the presence of the original outer canvas cover. The leather valise or small suitcase is in exceptionally fine condition, without much evidence of use, considering the age of the set, which is early 1900s. The leather is thick, heavy and shagreen-patterned pebble surface, remaining in fine condition, and the interior is entirely fitted in taupe moire silk, retaining its full compliment of English sterling silver and tortoise shell vanity items. You'll find the open space more than adequate for overnight or weekend trips, and of course if you find yourself on your own Orient Express, it's the perfect train case. The outer canvas protective case is still fine for storage, but it's a but shrunken over time to the extent that its snaps will not meet to fasten. But it's served well, and the leather is truly in fine condition. My photographer got to it before I'd had a chance to wipe away that whitish swoosh on the case top, but I can assure you it's not there now. Sorry for his haste, or my neglect of a bit of 'dusting'. The set is clean, undamaged, and is ready to use.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the outer canvas protective cover has born all the harm, apparently. It has shrunk a bit and will no longer snap over the case. The thick and excellent leather outer case is in fine condition, as is the moire silk lined interior, as you can see. And all of the English sterling and tortoise shell pique-worked vanity items are there, including the completely undamaged tortoise shell comb. The brushes have boar bristle, and are complete, and really do not appear to have been used much, if at all. There are no odors to the case or contents. The tortoise shell vanity set is just stunning, and is complete with brush and mirror, 2 elongated brushes for clothing, a comb, 2 cologne bottles and a fine powder jar. No dents or dings in silver and no flaws to the tortoise shell. The set will be fabulous on a dressing table when you're not traveling with it. Complete with the original keys (in the small silk pouch), the case will lock and handle is very good. Ready to go, or to display. One of our vanity sets was recently purchased for the set decoration of one of our favorite shows, Boardwalk Empire, so watch for it there. Likewise, this one is perfect as a prop for 1890-1930s sets.

A mid-19th century lady’s travelling dressing case. The case is constructed in a finely marked coromandel, with inset brass handles and brass guard bands to the angles. The hinged lid rises to reveal in the upper section, a drop down document holder, with a mirror to the back, the parcel gilt pieces are engraved with a Viscountess’s coronet, probably Charles, 2nd Viscount Hardinge Cornwallis (1822-1894) and inset with turquoises and comprise a suite of four cut-glass jars, a liqueur flask with a fitted cup, the pull-out rear shelf houses seven jars for ink, potions and unguents.
