About the Item

This late 17th-century North Italian or South Tyrolean cassone, crafted in walnut circa 1680–1700, reflects the symbolic richness and decorative depth of regional Baroque furniture. The chest is entirely constructed of walnut and features a carved central panel adorned with grapes and vine motifs, traditional symbols of abundance, health, and prosperity. This panel is framed by stylized foliage and flanked by a lunette on each side, creating a balanced and architectural façade. The outer corners are embellished with bold volutes or scrollwork that function as removable feet, surmounted by carved acanthus leaves. The lid is detailed with a simulated dentil molding affixed by wrought iron nails and finished with gadrooning along the edge. Original wrought iron side handles, hinges, and a functioning lock with key remain intact.
