About the Item

A rare and beautifully crafted English Regency Canterbury, dating to the early 19th century. Executed in richly figured walnut with warm, honeyed patina, this refined form features the classic crossed slat construction, designed to hold sheet music, folios, or periodicals. The slats pivot gracefully within a carved circular medallion, creating an architectural focal point that is both sculptural and functional. The upper structure is framed by delicately carved scrollwork and flanked by turned finials, resting above a single fitted drawer with original turned pulls—ideal for storing correspondence or smaller papers. Raised on elegant turned legs terminating in original brass casters, the piece was designed to be easily moved within a library or drawing room. Elegant yet practical, this Canterbury exemplifies the restrained ornament and exceptional craftsmanship of the Regency period. A highly versatile antique, it works beautifully beside a sofa or armchair, in a study, or as an accent piece in a well-appointed living space.
