About the Item
"Nomadic Copolymer" is formed by the work "Nomadic Bookshelf" by Cometabolism Studio, which is accompanied by the "Copolymer Image Project".Based on the form of the shelves of the knick-knack peddlers as depicted in the Song Dynasty's Pictures on Knick-knack Peddlers, the traditional peddlers used the shelves to exchange material goods, building nodes that link people in the city. “Nomadic Bookshelf” transforms it into a vehicle for carrying information in the urban space.
The Copolymer Image Project collects images from Taobao sellers of industrial metabolites, which are coarse and straightforward and have a certain industrial quality of their own, and reconstructs them through the mathematical logic of traditional patterns (paper cuts, wooden window panes, etc.). Cometabolism Studio attempts to move through the city together by means of a joint ‘Copolymer Image Project’ and ‘Nomadic Bookshelf’, using the complicated power of computer generation to dissipate its initial industrial intent, creating a particular sense of irony.
About the Artist:
Cometabolism Studio is a design studio based in Shanghai, founded by Zhang Ning and Yang Yafei. Zhang Ning graduated from the designer maker program at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London. The direction of her work explores the entangled relationship between objects and human behavior. Yang Yafei graduated from the Department of Oil Painting of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and Furniture Design at Central Academy of Fine Arts China. His works often use industrial readymades to blur the definition of objects and play with the idea of power of public space, attempting to derive industrial production relations through ready-made industrial components.
The duo have collaborated on several art and design projects as long-time friends and expect to rethink the creative process under the ruins of the post-industrial heritage. In 2020, they established Cometabolism Studio to explore the possibility of reactivating mass-produced industrial metabolites such as industrial components and blurring their function in space, allowing art to intervene in everyday space. At the same time, through digital generation and other technologies, they explore undefined art objects that can blur the border between the real and the virtual.
