About the Item

This is an old Japanese umbrella stand, crafted in the early Shōwa period (1900s–1940s). Its presence reflects the practical, understated beauty of everyday furnishings from that era. Made from sugi (Japanese cedar), the piece displays a deep, matured color and a soft, textured grain—shadows created by time that lend it a quietly expressive charm. The interior is fully lined with galvanized metal, designed to catch water from umbrellas. Multiple small holes are drilled into the bottom, allowing water to drain naturally rather than collect inside. This thoughtful construction reflects the practical wisdom of daily life in the past—something rarely seen in modern mass-produced items. The aged metal surface has developed a muted, weathered patina that contrasts beautifully with the warmth of the wood. The exterior wooden surfaces reveal gentle wear, subtle color variations, and traces of repeated care—all evidence that the piece was used and treasured for many years. These natural marks of age embody the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, where imperfection and time-born patina become sources of beauty. Despite its simple box-like form, the stand holds a calm, grounded presence that enriches any space with depth and quiet elegance. In terms of functionality, its generous capacity allows it to hold multiple umbrellas with ease. Its size and understated design make it suitable not only for private homes but also for cafés, boutiques, galleries, and other commercial spaces. Though an antique, it blends seamlessly into modern interiors, serving as a subtle yet striking accent. This umbrella stand is a rare piece in which Japanese daily culture, respect for materials, and the gentle layers of passing time come together in a single functional object. Weight: 8.5 kg __________________________ Our Philosophy Objects always tell the truth. All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give them deep affection as much as I can. There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty. But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing today and to question us about an essence of beauty again. I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have, feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
