Large custom made one-of-a-kind luxury cushion (pillow) created from an exquisite rare vintage pure silk Cartier fashion scarf in a striking print named ‘La Route des Indes’, translating to English as ‘The India Road’. It illustrates exotic elephants in procession adorned with fabulous opulent jewels. They spiral around the square frame one behind the other whimsically ascending in scale. The most magnificent of all leading at the front in a statuesque pose and elaborate decoration. Their eyes are pave set with previous stones of emerald and amethyst and the gold elephants continue along the boarder as well.
Cartier is a luxury Parisian empire which originated in 1847 with Louis-François Cartier and is recognised all around the world for their high end creations. The lavishly bejewelled exotic oriental creatures appear to be a reference to the brand’s signature necklaces, bracelets and earrings; ‘Tanjore’, and ‘Djigar’ necklaces, “Rajastan’ bracelet and ‘Gupta’ brooch. This particular peachy coral pink with jade green accents and a glorious subtle sheen is one of the most spectacular examples we have come across.
The fabric was personally hand-picked by Katie at antiques market ‘Marche aux Puces Saint-Ouen’ on the outskirts of Paris.

Magnificent carved velvet with a dominant linen pattern of Hungarian stitch, characteristic of the 17th century.
Fabulous woven pattern. For those interested, A Hungarian stitch is one of the oldest needlepoint techniques and employs three long stitches combined with two shorter ones to deliver, roughly, a diamond-shaped result. Shades of rose, red, green, yellow….very intricate in carved velvet. The end pattern gives a Missoni-inspired reinvented flame stitch of sorts.
As an aside, this is by far the most costly fabric in my inventory. I feel somewhat compelled (but not too much) to apologize for the pricing. But recently through an odd set of events, I found myself in a factory on the border of Belgium and France. Pierre Frey fabrics (and some being crafted for The Orient Express) were on their looms and I was captivated. Pricey…for sure…..worth it…no question.

A very delicate silk in perfect unused condition and beautifully soft to the touch. From a vintage designer boutique in Palm Beach, Florida. In 1923 Americans Edgar & Theresa Hyman founded ‘Echo’ scarves on their wedding day, naming the company by using his initials. The business grew and was strong enough by 1929 to survive the Depression. Echo was one of the most prominent and prolific manufacturers of women’s patriotic scarves during wartime. They described the wartime culture and encourage optimism through propaganda, many displaying instructional directions. The scarves in this period used nylon and other non-essential fabric. Interestingly in 1984, ‘Echo’ became the sole licensee for Polo/Ralph Lauren scarf...

Large custom made one of a kind luxury cushion (pillow) created from rare and exquisite vintage silk Liberty of London fashion scarf in a rich autumnal pattern. A dense foliage of multicolored leaves in a painterly quality, this plush cushion has a heavy and dramatic presence. The design in deep colors pops with the inclusion of the bright peachy pink. The silk is luxuriously soft to the touch with a subtle sheen. Founded by Arthur Liberty, the world famous British department store Liberty of London began trading in 1875 in a small shop called East India House, by the 1920s it was a leading establishment.
