This hand-crafted throw pillow was designed by a local Chicago artist and textile historian who lovingly repurposes the vintage fabrics, garments and embroidery fragments she collects during her travels. Down-filled and backed in dark linen, this plush pillow is faced with a patchwork of vintage Japanese suit fabrics from the early 20th century.
The Jazz Age of Japan, correlating with the Taisho period (1912-1926), was characterized by exuberance and an embrace of Western style. Young people eagerly adopted Western dress, with men swapping traditional garb for bell-bottom trousers, floppy ties, and brightly-colored shirts. As a tribute to this adventurous time, this throw pillow pieces together swatches of Japanese fabrics culled from men's suits in a dynamic patchwork.
