About the Item
Judy Ross is a New York based designer and artist. Traveling in India to work as an independent textile designer, she developed a passion for the centuries-old hand embroidery technique known as chain stitch, used by men in the Kashmir region to embellish shawls. She lived on a houseboat on Upper Dal Lake while collaborating with the master embroiderers to develop a line of impeccably stitched contemporary wool scarves. Two decades later she still works with the same artisans and has established a trusting and loving relationship with them.
From embroidered scarves, her product line has expanded to home textiles: pillows, rugs, fabric by the yard, curtains, bedcovers, and wall hangings. Judy Ross Textiles also produces furniture pieces such as stools, cubes and screens.
The Judy Ross pillow collection pairs centuries-old chain stitch techniques with contemporary design. Each piece is meticulously embroidered by hand using the finest 3-ply New Zealand wool. The wool is hand dyed, adding depth and nuance to the color. Master artisans embroider fields of small, dense stitches that give the designs movement and texture. Some pillow styles incorporate rayon yarn used to impart lustrous highlights throughout. Judy Ross' pillows offer durability and a unique artistic sensibility valued and collected by a loyal clientele.
Hand embroidered by our artisans, these pillows use the finest, hand-dyed New Zealand wool, with a cotton canvas overlay backing and a 5/95 down/feather insert.
