Antique 17th Century Charles II Carved Oak Bible Document Box 6 Plank Trunk 1680
Located in Portland, OR
A good antique English, Charles II (Carolean) period carved oak bible or document box, circa 1680. Such boxes were particularly popular in the 17th century, when printed bibles were very expensive and a treasured family possession. The bible was most likely the only book owned by a family and was also the means of recording births, deaths & marriages which would be written on the flyleaf or endpapers. They were also used to protect other important documents and valuables and were brought to colonial America by early settlers. This bible box dates shortly after the English Civil War & the brief time that England was a Republic (known then as the Commonwealth) under Oliver Cromwell. The box typifies those Puritan values, simple six plank construction with a hinged lid enclosing a storage area for a bible or important documents. The front of the box having a carved foliate twin lunette design with a hand cut steel lock & hasp above, the box is robust & solid & for it's 350 or so years it is in very good condition! This very early antique carved bible box...

Antique Sterling Silver Mug
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
A fine and impressive small antique 17th century English sterling silver mug; an addition to our silverware collection. This fine and impressive antique William & Mary* sterling silver mug has a cylindrical tapering form. The surface of this hand raised silver mug is embellished with the impressive engraved chinoiserie decoration depicting simplified figures farming. The decoration to the body incorporates an organic bordered cartouche ornamented with the contemporary engraved initials 'SH'. The body of this sterling silver mug is further embellished with bands of tooled decoration, in addition to applied moulded decoration to the upper and lower rims. This 17th century silver mug is fitted with an impressive cast silver S scroll handle ornamented with thread decoration. Such examples from this period are rare to the market and becoming increasing difficult to locate. * This period of history saw the co-reign of King William III and Queen Mary II from 1689 until her death in 1694. Mary was the princess royal and daughter of Charles I and William III, who was also known as William of Orange, was the sovereign Prince of Orange from birth, Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, and Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from the 1670s. NOTE: After surviving the Great Fire of London the records at the London Assay office were destroyed by fire in 1681; their catalogues and documentation began again in 1697. Due to this unfortunate event we are unable to associate a maker to this mug. Condition This 17th century silver mug is an excellent gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent condition. The engraved decoration is all crisp in keeping with age. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the mug are very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this small antique silver...

An Important Late 17th Century Japanese Lacquered Cabinet Edo Period on Stand
Located in Benington, Herts
An extremely fine, elegant and rare late 17th Century Japanese lacquer cabinet, from the Eco period, on later lacquered black stand. Japanese circa 1690 Provenance A private Scottish collection This outstanding cabinet is a fascinating fusion of east and west. The cabinet itself would have been made in Japan, c.1690, and is decorated to the outside with hiramaki-e lacquer. This technique involves the use of sprinkled gold powder which adheres to the lacquer surface. On the best pieces, as with this example, many layers are added in order to create areas of high relief and give depth to the surface decoration. The taste of the Japanese workshops in this period was often for quite restrained pieces with plenty of the black background visible, unlike some of the busier Chinese lacquer or European japanned examples produced around the same time. The Japanese makers seemed content to rely on the outstanding quality of the lacquer itself, regarded by most experts as the finest lacquer ever produced, and did not see the need to cover every surface believing that less was more in this respect. The lacquer here is used to produce a mountainous scene with buildings on the bank of a river, the other side of the river with more buildings and a contrasting flatter and forested landscape. The fine perspective achieved is the result of the clever use of raised and flatter areas in the lacquer itself in combination with the drawing of the design itself. Another remarkable aspect of this piece is the fine metalware throughout, but particularly the lockplate / hasp, hinges and foot mounts to the front. This is all beautifully cast and engraved contrasting against the black background. Interestingly another cabinet on stand with near identical metalwork was advertised in the Burlington Magazine, November 1913, with the dealer W. Williamson and Sons of Guildford. The lacquer on that piece is similarly refined and it seems likely that both pieces came from the same workshop. The European influence in our piece can be seen in both the later ebonised stand and in the japanned decoration which has been applied to the inside of the doors and is also very fine indeed. This consists of two panels with birds of prey perched on branches in colours set against a golden background. The cabinet has a recent Scottish provenance and so it is likely that the ebonised stand was made in Britain though such pieces were made throughout Europe as a way of quite literally elevating these imported pieces of eastern lacquer as in Japan these would have been used on the floor. Inside the cabinet there is a combination of more Japanese lacquer and lock plates and European drawer handles. Most of the lacquer drawer fronts incorporate mountainous scenes and birds in combination, with a few purely one or the other of the two subjects. Again the lacquer is in excellent condition and is of exceptional quality with multiple layers of relief used in one single scene in many cases. As mentioned above, Japanese lacquer is the most technically brilliant of the eastern lacquers and, as such, was highly prized by collectors and connoisseurs throughout Europe when this piece was made. The acquisition of such pieces would only have been possible for a small group of incredibly wealthy individuals, largely royal or high ranking courtiers or merchants connected with the East India trade...

Original Antique Blaeu Map of Karst, Carniola, Istria, and Trieste, circa 1640
Located in Langweer, NL
Blaeu Map of Karst, Carniola, Istria, and Trieste, circa 1640 This is an original antique map titled “Karstia, Carniola, Histria et Windorum Marchia,” published by Willem Blaeu in Amsterdam circa 1640. The map depicts the historical regions of Karst (Karstia), Carniola (modern-day Slovenia), Istria (the peninsula shared by Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy), and the Windic March, a medieval border territory. The engraving shows detailed place names, rivers, mountains, and settlements across present-day Slovenia, northeastern Italy, and northwestern Croatia. The Gulf of Trieste is prominently illustrated at the lower left, with Trieste labelled and coastal settlements clearly indicated. The Adriatic Sea is elegantly engraved with stippled waters, a compass rose, rhumb lines, and a sailing ship, enhancing its decorative maritime appeal. In the upper left corner is a beautifully designed cartouche bearing the title within a scrollwork frame with foliage and drapery motifs. The lower left includes a mileage scale in Italian miles and a dedication to Guiljelmus Blaeu excudit, confirming its publication from the Blaeu workshop. Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571–1638) was one of the leading Dutch cartographers of the early 17th century, succeeded by his son Joan Blaeu. Their maps were known for their precision, aesthetic engraving, and clarity, making the Blaeu atlases the most prestigious publications of the Dutch Golden Age. Condition: Good condition. Strong, clean impression on laid paper with wide margins. Light age toning and faint foxing in blank margins, minor creasing along the original centre fold as issued. No tears or repairs noted. Fully suitable for framing. Framing tips: Frame this map in a thin black, walnut, or gilt frame to enhance its historic character. Use an off-white or cream archival mat to highlight the detailed engraving and preserve the sheet edges. UV-protective glazing is recommended to protect the paper and ensure its clarity and integrity over time. 17th Century Charles II Month Going Marquetry Longcase Clock by John Wise
Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
A superb Charles II month duration floral marquetry longcase clock by the well-known maker John Wise, c. 1680-85. Measure: 10". The case is of the highest quality and decorated throughout in very attractive floral marquetry depicting spring flowers and birds showing a high level of sophistication with a glazed circular lenticle to the door. Similarly, the rising hood is decorated with blind frets around the top and surmounted by a shallow caddy decorated by five gilt wooden ball finials. It is flanked by prominent gilt brass-capped solid barley twist columns, with blind fretted panels to the sides. The month-going nicely finned and knopped five pillar movement has reversed going and striking trains, the striking train (on the right) being regulated by a small outside countwheel. The going train has anchor escapement and a seconds pendulum. The movement is fronted by a 10-inch brass dial with an unusual narrow silvered chapter ring, seconds ring and date aperture. It has elaborate cherub-head spandrels in the corners and is signed along the bottom John Wise Londini Fecit. The middle is finely matted, whilst the time is indicated by a fine pair of blued-steel hands, the hour hand richly pierced. The maker John Wise was born in Banbury shortly before 17 March 1624, the date of his baptism. He was the son of John and Ann Wise and a cousin of Joseph Knibb...
