About the Item
A large surrealist oil on canvas titled 'Dream World' signed 'RJ Wendell' for Raymond John Wendell (1917-2005), and dated 48 lower left.
This particular work was featured in life Magazine in 1948 and has several labels on the verso, including a Minneapolis Art Institute label and an Addison Gallery label.
Raymond John Wendell served in the United States Navy during World War Two and later attended Yale. In 1952, Wendell was commissioned by legendary designer Dorothy Marckwald (1898-1986) to paint ten murals on aluminum panels for the new American ocean line S.S. United States. It appears that Wendell later disappeared from public view and died in obscurity.
