Late 19th Century Antique French Aubusson Rug, Hotel Lobby Size Carpet
By Eugène-Pierre Gourdet, Jules-Edmond-Charles Lachaise
Located in Dallas, TX
74394 Late 19th Century Antique Aubusson Rug, 14'06 x 25'03. A French Aubusson rug refers to a type of flat-weave rug that originated in the town of Aubusson, located in the Creuse region of central France. These rugs have a long history dating back to the 15th century, and they are renowned for their exquisite craftsmanship, intricate designs, and fine materials. Exuding an aura of true decadence, this Late 19th Century antique French Aubusson rug emerges as a mesmerizing testament to handwoven beauty. Its intricate details and luxurious texture captivate the senses, offering a glimpse into the opulent world of Aubusson craftsmanship. At its heart lies an elaborate design reminiscent of a palatial facade. A central acanthus leaf oval ceiling medallion, outlined by complementary scrollwork, evokes romantic connotations, while an array of quincunx motifs, reminiscent of the ceiling designs by Jules-Edmond-Charles Lachaise and Eugene-Pierre Gourdet, adorn the field in an alluring pattern. Trompe l'oeil filigree adorns a delicate light pink oval band encircling the inner composition, where a rose festoon intertwines with a floral swag, adding a touch of delicate elegance. Resplendent round cartouche pendants dangle from an undulating ribbon band entwined with floral swag borders, further enhancing the rug's grandeur. This antique Aubusson rug is enclosed by an acanthus ribbon border, coupled with an outer scallop border, creating a refined frame for its formal composition. These design elements, customary for Aubusson arrangements, showcase the style's predominant French influence, featuring ornate armorial medallions within intricate borders of rinceaux and garnished foliage. But it is not only the embellishments that captivate; the extraordinary use of color adds depth and allure to the rug's narrative. Each hue harmonizes with the next, creating a mesmerizing dance that speaks with a timeless voice of sensual decadence and stately elegance. In its entirety, this Aubusson masterpiece weaves together the tender, emotive, and vibrant details of human history, embodying the grand charm of a textile that transcends time, leaving an indelible mark on those who behold its beauty. Abrash. Desirable Age Wear. Some Discoloration. Handwoven wool. Made in France. Measures: 14'06 x 25'03. Hotel Lobby Size Carpet 15 x 25 Rug...

Late 19th Century Persian Kermanshah Masterpiece of Biophilic Elegance
Located in Dallas, TX
74298 Oversized Antique Persian Kermanshah Rug, 13'06 x 17'04. A rare confluence of heritage and harmony, this hand-knotted wool antique Persian Kermanshah rug exudes a grandeur that transcends time. Its warm, earthen field unfolds in a mesmerizing lattice of Mina Khani motifs, palmettes, and stylized florals—an eternal garden rendered in wool. Against this intricate backdrop, every detail blossoms with refined precision, echoing the elegance once reserved for Persian nobility. To encounter such a piece is to experience a textile symphony of nature, geometry, and artistry intertwined, a woven manuscript of beauty that elevates any interior to the realm of the extraordinary. The rug’s composition is framed by a stately Herati palmette border, itself a gallery of exceptional artistry. Encircled within are delicate guard bands, alive with flowers and rare cloudband motifs that hint at celestial order, balance, and eternity. This refined framing not only anchors the field but also magnifies its lush vitality, much like an ornate garden wall enclosing a timeless Persian masterpiece. Each design element whispers of grandeur, status, and cultivated taste—a symbol of belonging to a legacy of discerning collectors. Beyond its historical artistry, this one-of-a-kind Kermanshah rug speaks directly to the language of Biophilic Design. Its earth-toned palette and naturalistic forms—buds unfurling, vines curving, blossoms interlacing—bring the serenity of nature indoors, transforming space into sanctuary. It offers not mere decoration, but an atmosphere of wellbeing, grounding its owner in both cultural prestige and a timeless connection to the natural world. Such qualities have made rugs of this caliber coveted by connoisseurs who seek not just luxury, but luxury with soul. To possess this exquisite work of art is to hold an heirloom of rarity and significance—an artwork woven not only for the floor but for the legacy of its keeper. Its monumental scale, formal elegance, and sublime craftsmanship command a presence befitting the grandest of salons, yet its earthbound grace makes it equally resonant in contemporary spaces that honor organic modernity. More than an antique, this Persian Kermanshah is a distinguished treasure, destined to define its surroundings and elevate its owner into the ranks of cultural tastemakers. Antique and Vintage Rugs for Sale: Shop Turkish Rugs, Moroccan Rugs, Indian Rugs and Other Rugs on 1stDibs

Good antique rugs and vintage rugs have made their way into homes across the globe, becoming fixtures used for comfort, prayer and self-expression, so choosing the right area rug is officially a universal endeavor.

In modern usage, “carpet” typically denotes a wall-to-wall floor cushioning that is fixed to the floor. Rugs, on the other hand, are designed to cover a specific area and can easily be moved to new locations. However, the terms are interchangeable in many parts of the world, and, in the end, it won’t matter what you decide to call it.

It’s well known that a timeless Persian rug or vintage Turkish rug can warm any interior, but there are lots of other styles of antique rugs to choose from when you're endeavoring to introduce fresh colors and textures to a bedroom or living room.

Moroccan Berber rugs are not all about pattern. In fact, some of the most striking examples are nearly monochrome. But what these rugs lack in complexity, they make up for in brilliant color and subtle variation. Moroccan-style interiors can be mesmerizing — a sitting room of this type might feature a Moroccan rug, carved wooden screens and a tapestry hung behind the sofa.

Handwoven kilim rugs, known for their wealth of rich colors and unique weaving tradition, are pileless: Whereas the Beni Ourain rugs of Morocco can be described as dense with a thick surface or pile, an authentic kilim rug is thin and flat. (The term “kilim” is Turkish in origin, but this type of textile artistry is practiced all across the Balkans, throughout the Arab world and elsewhere.)

When it comes to eye-catching floor coverings, the distinctive “medallion” pattern of Oushak rugs has two types of rounded shapes alternating against a rich red or blue background created with natural dyes, while the elaborate “star” pattern involves large eight-pointed shapes in diagonal rows alternating with diamonds.

If you’re looking for something unexpected, find a runner rug that pops in your hallway or on your stairs. Dig for dazzling geometric patterns in our inventory of mid-century modern rugs and carpets, which includes works designed by the likes of Swedish textile masters Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Marianne Richter and other artisans.

Carpets and rugs have been around for thousands of years. Prehistoric humans turned to animal skin, wool and fur to craft simple fabrics to soften hard terrain. A 2016 study suggests that "cave lions" were hunted for exactly this purpose, and that decorating your cave with their pelts may have conferred strength and prestige. Although many of these early textiles are still in existence, tracing their precise origins is difficult. Carpets quickly became such a valuable trade commodity that the weavings could easily travel far from their places of origin.

The oldest known carpet was found in southern Siberia. (It may have traveled there from Persepolis in Iran.) For the flat-weave floor rugs crafted by Native Americans, cotton was the primary material before sheep’s wool was introduced in the 16th century. In Europe, carpet-making was fundamental to folk art, and Asian carpets imported to European countries were at one time considered a precious luxury and not intended to remain permanently on the floor.
