About the Item
Late 19th century Caucasian Shirvan area rug hand-woven in the Shirvan village of the Azerbaijan region of the southern Caucasus, this piece is a testament to the unique tribal motifs and vibrant colors of the region.
This beautiful Shirvan rug features a classic and captivating triple medallion design. The three large diamond-shaped medallions, in striking ivory and orange colors, command the main field of the rug. The design is set against a deep and elegant navy blue background, where the luminous ivory of the diamonds stands out in beautiful contrast.
The corners of the field are adorned with charming pale plum-colored spandrels, featuring geometric forms that are thought to resemble "face drawings" and add to the rug's tribal, symbolic character. The entire composition is masterfully framed by a bright ivory color border, which is filled with its own intricate geometric designs in complementary shades of yellow, warm brown, and navy.
