About the Item

This exquisite Antique Shirvan Prayer Rug is a superb example of the finely woven and spiritually significant textiles produced in the East Caucasus during the late 19th century. Measuring 112 x 133 cm (approx. 3'8" x 4'4"), its near-square dimension and distinct niche-top design clearly mark its purpose as a saph or prayer mat. The central field features a dense, mesmerizing pattern of repeating, small boteh (paisley/flame) motifs, rendered in rich reds, browns, and blues, all set against a beautiful deep indigo/navy blue ground. The top of the field is defined by a stylized mihrab (prayer niche), a characteristic element that focuses the eye and adds a sense of reverence to the design. The complex and visually busy borders are particularly noteworthy, featuring diagonal stripes (barber pole) and intricate geometric guard bands that utilize a full palette of natural dyes—including warm golds, terra cottas, and creams. Woven from soft, high-quality hand-spun wool and colored with saturated natural dyes, this rug has a fine knot count, reflecting the meticulous village weaving traditions of the Shirvan region. This exceptionally well-preserved antique textile serves as both a historical artifact and a unique, captivating floor or wall accent.
