About the Item

This masterful Antique Kuba Rug is a highly detailed and finely woven textile from the East Caucasus, dating to circa 1880. Measuring 115 x 161 cm (approx. 3'9" x 5'3"), its medium size and captivating, intricate design make it an outstanding accent piece and a valuable collectible. The composition is centered on a rich madder red field, which is almost completely covered by a dense, repeating floral lattice pattern. The pattern is composed of highly stylized, teardrop-shaped motifs (resembling boteh or stylized tulips) executed in tones of teal/blue-green and red, interconnected by fine vines. This combination of dense pattern and fine knotting is a hallmark of the sophisticated weaving centers around Kuba. The field is framed by exceptionally elaborate borders, including a main border featuring repeating geometric rosettes/guls and several guard bands filled with diagonal stripes (barber pole motif). Woven with a characteristically thin, dense structure from high-quality hand-spun wool and colored exclusively with a wide spectrum of deep, saturated natural dyes, this rug demonstrates superior craftsmanship. This textile is in excellent condition for its age, retaining its superb structural integrity and color harmony.
