About the Item

This exceptionally rare Antique Cloudband (Chondzoresk) Rug is a powerful and historically significant textile from the Southern Caucasus, dating to the late 19th century. Measuring 125 x 227 cm (approx. 4'1" x 7'5"), its substantial runner size and monumental design make it a commanding art piece for any gallery or sophisticated interior. The design is dominated by a column of large, dramatic hexagonal medallions, alternating between deep navy blue and muted madder red fields. Within these massive forms are highly stylized, interconnected "cloudband" (or abstracted dragon/vishap) motifs rendered in stark white and pale blue. These powerful, angular forms are characteristic of the Chondzoresk style, which represents one of the most abstract and sought-after patterns in Caucasian weaving. The borders feature intricate geometric star and arrow motifs, beautifully separating the intense central composition from the edges. Woven from robust, high-quality hand-spun wool with a characteristically thick, durable pile, and colored exclusively with deep, enduring natural dyes, this rug embodies the strength and profound tribal mythology of the Karabagh region.
