About the Item

This engaging Antique Bordjalou (Borchalo) Kazak Rug is a robust and visually distinct tribal textile from the South Caucasus, dating to circa 1880. Measuring 133 x 199 cm (approx. 4'4" x 6'6"), its versatile size and complex, paneled design make it a commanding and historically rich art piece. The central field is characterized by a unique composition of three distinct, vertically stacked rectangular panels. These panels feature alternating ground colors of vibrant madder red and deep teal blue, each densely filled with stylized geometric medallions, angular abstract forms, and archaic tribal symbols. The alternating color fields and the block structure emphasize the powerful, primitive geometry that defines the Bordjalou weaving tradition. The entire central structure is framed by an exceptionally wide, geometric border system. The main border, set against a crisp cream/ivory ground, features large, repeating geometric devices and prominent latch-hook motifs in red and blue, providing strong visual energy. Woven from durable, high-quality hand-spun wool with a characteristically thick, plush pile, and colored exclusively with deep, saturated natural dyes, this rug embodies the strength and authenticity of late 19th-century Caucasus craftsmanship.
