About the Item

This powerful Antique Caucasian Kazak Runner Rug is a robust and visually striking tribal textile from the South Caucasus, dating to the late 19th century. Measuring 133 x 282 cm (approx. 4'4" x 9'3"), its elongated format and dramatic, vertical design make it a commanding art piece for any hallway, gallery, or entrance area. The central field features a vertical column of large, geometrically imposing stepped medallions (guls), where the background colors transition between deep teal/blue-green, rich madder red, and navy blue, creating a layered visual effect. The medallions themselves are characterized by bold, cruciform (cross-like) extensions and intricate internal geometric patterns, rendered in contrasting ivory and blue. The field is sparsely scattered with small tribal filler motifs. The composition is framed by an elaborate border system, featuring a wide main band of repeating geometric star-guls and stylized floral motifs against a cream/ivory ground, flanked by dense, dark guard bands. Woven from durable, high-quality hand-spun wool with a characteristically thick, plush pile, and colored exclusively with deep, saturated natural dyes, this rug embodies the authenticity and enduring strength of Kazak weaving.
