About the Item
This magnificent Antique Kazak Rug is a powerful and highly graphic example of South Caucasian tribal weaving, dating to circa 1880. Measuring 138 x 204 cm (approx. 4'6" x 6'8"), its substantial size and dynamic design make it an impressive focal point for a living room, dining area, or gallery setting.
The design is characterized by its dramatic use of color blocking and bold geometry. The central field features a vertical column of three large, interconnected geometric medallions (or stylized crosses/guls), alternating between fields of saturated madder red and deep indigo/navy blue. These prominent motifs are outlined with striking contrast colors—yellow, white, and a lighter blue—and filled with intricate tribal symbols and small, colorful squares. This powerful composition is highly indicative of the Bordjalou or similar robust Kazak substyles.
The rug is framed by a broad, striking main border featuring large, stylized geometric "S" motifs or stylized dragons (vishap), often interpreted as symbols of protection and eternity, rendered in ivory, red, and blue. Woven from robust, hand-spun wool with a thick, plush pile, and colored exclusively with deep, enduring natural dyes, this rug embodies the strength and authenticity of its origin. This well-preserved textile is an essential piece for collectors of true tribal antique carpets.
