About the Item

Tacheh are saddle bags employed by the people of the Bakhtiari tribe. These are woven in wool by means of different techniques, which include interlock tapestry, dovetailing, weft float brocading and knotted pile. They were principally used for the storage and transport of wheat. Early examples, such as the one presented here, are used both as scatter rugs as well as hangings. The colourful stripe pattern in differing widths, decorating the front panel of the saddle bag, contrasts with the empty field of the back, save for some tiny splinters obtained through eccentric wefting. This piece retains the loops necessary for the ropes to pass through in order to secure the bundle of wheat. A true work of tribal textile art. This piece is published in our online exhibition entitled 'From Eurasia with Love - Antique Tribal Textile Art from Persia and the Transcaucasus'.
