About the Item

Tacheh are saddle bags employed by the people of the Bakhtiari tribe. These are woven in wool by means of different techniques, which include interlock tapestry, dovetailing, weft float brocading and knotted pile. They were principally used for the storage and transport of wheat. Early examples are used both as scatter rugs as well as hangings. On this miniature example, the pile section doesn’t have the typical niche-like format. This is instead represented by a large rectangular compartment containing a chequerboard pattern. The earth tones employed on the piled bridge are also evident on the front panel, woven in various shades of mocha brown with flame-like elements in natural ivory. This piece is published in our online exhibition entitled 'From Eurasia with Love - Antique Tribal Textile Art from Persia and the Transcaucasus'.
