About the Item

Tacheh are wool saddle bags employed by the nomadic people of the Bakhtiari tribe. These were principally used for the storage and transport of wheat. This complete, opened example allows us to appreciate the various techniques involved in the construction of these containers, which include interlock tapestry, dovetailing, weft float brocading and knotted pile. One wonders why they would put so much attention towards exquisite details when weaving such utilitarian objects. The flame-like character of the central motifs testify the distant Zoroastrian past of the Bakhtiari. Interestingly, these flame elements always appear on the panel resting against the body of the donkey or horse, so that this contact becomes propitiatory for good energy and protection.
