About the Item
Gendje rugs are woven in the southwest Caucasus, surrounded by the weaving centers of Kazak, Karabagh, and Shirvan. A major railway line that ran from Tiflis to Baku passed through this area, and thus it became a major market or trading post for all of the weavings from the surrounding areas. The rugs woven here utilize the structure and geometric designs found in Kazak rugs, but they avoid having the large medallions associated with that type of rug. The colors used tend to be lighter and paler than those found in Kazaks. This runner has seven geometric stepped medallions flanked by birds on a scarlet field. The rosette border design of this runner is often attributed to this weaving area. 10' 8" x 3' 8".
