This antique, circa 1910, Malayer rug has a shaded sky-blue field with a column of linked lozenges alternating with stepped lozenges each containing angular floral vine flanked at each side by similar pairs of smaller lozenges and a pair of boteh at each end, in an ivory border of angular serrated leaf vine between mole-brown lozenge stripes.
Malayer rugs, originating from the town of Malayer in northwest Iran, are prized for their intricate designs, high quality, and unique character. Known for their fine craftsmanship, these rugs typically feature floral or geometric patterns that are both elaborate and balanced, often in earthy, rich tones of red, blue, ivory, and brown.
